About This Spot

Stepping into El Purepecha feels like being welcomed into a vibrant, warmly lit gathering where the rich rhythms of Mexican tradition meet the casual ease of a beloved neighborhood spot. Located just off the beaten path in Philadelphia’s Old City, it carries an inviting energy—laid back yet lively—where the pace slows enough to savor moments but holds the quiet buzz of good conversation and clinking glasses.

The atmosphere here is a thoughtful blend of colorful authenticity and unpretentious comfort. Rustic wood accents and playful nods to Mexican culture set the stage, but it’s the easygoing flow of the space and the attentive, genuinely friendly team that create an environment where strangers feel more like old friends sharing a meal. It’s the kind of place where a seat at the bar opens the door to stories, and the table spills over with shared plates designed to encourage mingling and discovery.

Food at El Purepecha doesn’t just arrive—it unfolds. Imagine starting with chips served alongside a salsa verde that refreshes the palate with a bright twist or a warm, comforting mug of horchata that invites quiet reflection between bites. Tacos arrive juicy and generous, each bite layered with the subtle smokiness of slow-cooked meats and the crisp pop of fresh garnishes. The menu’s generosity extends to hearty portions that encourage sharing, whether it’s a plate of loaded nachos or a tender, mole-rich burrito that feels like a secret recipe handed down through generations.

Beyond the food, there’s a liquid welcome—cocktails that balance classic flavors with unexpected touches, like a mango margarita that dances sweet and tart on the tongue or a canelazo that wraps around you like a worn-in sweater on a cool evening. These drinks aren’t just companions to the meal; they’re gestures of hospitality themselves, crafted to linger alongside conversation and laughter.

El Purepecha feels like a thoughtful pause in a city full of rush. It’s where familiar flavors arrive with quiet surprises, and where the joy of eating is as much about human connection as the food itself. Here, every visit deepens a relationship—with the culture, with the team, and with the simple pleasure of good company and well-made Mexican cuisine.

Great food and fair prices. The wings were perfectly crisp and even without the sauce were delicious. The nachos were LOADED and fantastic as well as were the tacos. Additionally the customer service was amazing. Overall this was a great experience and definitely a place to check out.

Our bartender Becky was so friendly. Drinks were amazing especially the canelazo. So comforting and warm. The portion sizes were huge. The aquachiles was so citrusy and refreshing.

AMAZING! is all I can say. FAVORITE new Mexican restaurant. The salsa Verde mixed with pico and lime juice is just a great new take on salsa for dipping with chips. We had the combo fajitas with chicken, steak and shrimp. The steak was simple the best we have ever had at a Mexican restaurant. HIGHLY RECOMMEND

Excellent food, friendly/attentive waitstaff, fun interior and decor, good prices. All in all, just a great happy hour or dinner spot! We loved the elote dip, enough so that my girlfriend will go back and have it just as her meal.

I’ve been visiting this restaurant for a little over a year now and it’s easily one of my favorite spots. I typically come during late lunch hours, grab a seat at the bar and enjoy some quiet time reading, scrolling, or chatting with the staff. The service is always top-notch. Becky and Carlito are incredible , welcoming, attentive and just genuinely good energy to be around. They both also makes the best spicy strawberry margaritas, hands down ! Now the food? Always fresh, always hot and packed with flavor. I rotate between two favorites but let me just say the chicken verde enchiladas are next-level ! The chicken is tender, the verde sauce is flavorful with just the right amount of tang and spice and it’s plated with care. Every bite hits. It’s comforting, satisfying, and honestly one of the best versions I’ve had anywhere. When I’m not ordering that, I go for the steak fajitas which are equally amazing and full of flavor. The vibe is relaxed, friendly, and never too crowded. It’s a great spot whether you’re coming solo, on a date or with family. While I do wish they stayed open a bit later, I appreciate that keeping limited hours helps them maintain their high standard of service and food quality. That’s rare and worth protecting. Highly recommend checking them out you’ll be back after the first visit!

The best cheese with chorizo that I’ve had. I don’t understand the comments of people saying that it’s bad because it was perfection. If you really want authentic and Mexican food, come here. I do have to criticize the margaritas cause they had a lot of ice. But otherwise staff friendly, good vibes, good food.

This was my third visit to this Mexican restaurant, but my 1st time dining at the bar. The ambiance at the bar felt much more inviting and the air conditioning is always on full blast. As always, the food was exceptional, but what stood out even more was the cleanliness of the place. I really appreciated how attentive the bartender and waitstaff were in cleaning up after each customer, which made it easy to unwind after a long week. The generous portions are perfect for enjoying a meal with friends, and the drinks are a delightful mix of unique and familiar flavors. Overall, it was a wonderful evening, and I look forward to returning!
